Educational activities

Educational activity

At the Institute, we provide courses and laboratories for undergraduates and graduate students of Nagasaki University and external Institutes.

Undergraduate activity

Undergraduate students attending the Faculty of Fisheries belong to 1 of 4 courses, and spend a short part of their summers taking intensive laboratory courses regarding the physiology and ecology of important fisheries species. They spend time collecting plankton samples, studying the morphology of local fish species, as well as conduct physiological experiments on fish and other marine animals.

Deciding on your undergraduate lab

Since we are not on the main campus, prospective undergraduate students should be aware of a number of details regading life and trave to and from the Institute.

Transportation

The Institute is about 15 km (25 to 30 minutes by car) from the main campus. Prospective students must find a way of traveling to our campus. If traveling by bus, the Institute is 2 km from the nearest bus stop (i.e., Ajiro-bashi bus stop). Buses that stop at the Ajiro-bashi bus stop are few and infrequent. Travel to the Institute from apartments from the nearby Mie district will also require 2 to 3 km of travel. Although the Institute has a dormitory, it is exclusive used for special educational use and is not available for students doing their undergraduate and graduate research in any of the laboratories of the Institute.

Mie, Azekari, and Kyodomari housing information

The apartments are plentiful and apartments that students often rent have the following characteristics.

  • Rent: 42,000 to 48,000 JPY
  • Parking: Parking can be found but is not part of the rent and must be rented seperately.
  • Space: Kitchen and 3 m2 living room (42,000 JPY); kitchen and 16 m living room (45,000 JPY)
  • Deposit: Three months deposit and first month rent in advance is often requested.

Life at the Institute

We are busy. At the Institute, we run many of the summer labs of the Faculty of Fisheries. There are at least 4 summer labs a year. Regardless of your lab, you are expected to assist any activities regarding summer labs, symposia, and workshops run by the center. Many scientists from other institutions visit and conduct research at the Institute and students are also expected to help when needed. Each lab at the Institue also conducts many extracurricular activities and outreach, so be prepared to have an eventful time.
